Gone – Michael Grant (13+)

The “Gone” series has been out since 2008 but this is the first chance I’ve had in my crazy reading schedule to pick it up. I thought it’d be a good choice for my YA book club “The Outsiders”, and goodness knows I love a good dystopian thriller.

It’s a long book at 500+ pages but I read it in 3 sittings (the last of which finished at 1:30am because I HAD TO KNOW!). The series itself is 7 books (soon to be 8) in total so it is a big commitment. But well worth it in my opinion.

“Gone” is an amazing ride into a typical American beach town until it is cut off from the world and many supernatural events occur…like everyone over the age of 14 disappearing. With a reluctant hero in the divine Sam; a charasmatic, psychopathic and evil leader in Caine; a smart and sassy side kick in Astrid; and a host of other characters that evolve throughout the story, this novel certainly held my attention.

I’m still not 100% sure how I feel about the reason behind what happened in this town (no spoilers here!), but the plot itself was so good that I’m not certain any explanation or ending would have totally satisfied me.

If you like your fiction dark and somewhat disturbed you’re going to love this series.
