Everyone seems to be giving this book shining reviews, but I just didn’t find it all that fantastic. Perhaps this is because this is the first ever Holly Black novel I’ve read (and I’m not yet used to her style)? Or maybe it just wasn’t mind kind of book? When I first heard about the book, it sounded amazing and I was so excited to read it. But it turned out to be a little bit of a let-down for me.
I found the first 200 or so pages a bit of a slog to get through. It seemed to have a strange kind of pacing and some scenes just didn’t seem necessary to me. It almost made the first half of the book feel like a very long back-story or introduction.
Personally, I really didn’t like any of the characters. I totally understand the idea of having each and every character flawed in some way so that none of them are perfect, but I just didn’t like them and I didn’t “get” them. For me, that made it really hard to fully delve into and enjoy the book. I found myself frustrated with the main character and basically annoyed at everyone else.
For most of the book, I was planning on rating it 2 stars. However, the last 150 or so pages redeemed it. I loved the action and the intrigue and all the various plans falling into place. I wish more of the book was like that.
Overall, I ended up like it, though nowhere near as much as other people have, I’m sure. Black managed to pique my interest in the second half of the book, and I’ll probably read the sequel to see how things pan out.
